at 11:20 today. we want to know what you think these candidates should talk about, or what mitt romney should specifically address in his speech and what foreign- policy issues you think he needs to talk about more on the campaign trail. already getting reaction from facebook this morning. host: just below that, eleanor rights -- host: we want to get to your calls this morning, start calling in now. we have -- we will read to you a few more articles from this speech. "mitt romney strives to stand apart in global policy." host: again, that speech is happening at about 11:20 this morning. we will take our first call on this from clinton, illinois. matt is waiting on the independent line. good morning. caller: mitt romney needs to go after the whole libya at incident. he may have made a few missteps regarding coming out with information, but he needs to layoff of that, because it is one thing that he can actually use. i do not know if it will help his foreign policy, because obama can just come back and say -- that is what i did -- but that is something he will really have to focus on if

health care decisions. governor romney talks about freedom. but freedom is the ability to determine the care you need when you need it. freedom is the ability to change jobs or start your own business without the fear of losing your health insurance. freedom is the knowledge that you'll no longer be charged more than men for the same health care. or denied affordable coverage just because you've beat cancer. and at a time when women make up nearly half the work force, and an increasing share of family bread winners, these are not just health issues or women's issues. these are economic issues that are vital and affect every family in america. they matter. when -- when a woman is the main bread winner for her family but takes home less pay for the same work, as a man does because she's a woman, that is not right. when my opponent's campaign was asked if he'd support legislation given -- giving women the tools to fight for an equal day's pay for an equal day's work, he said we'll get back to you on that and since then refused to explain his position. you've already got my answer. upho

the world more chaotic and us less safe. >> governor romney talked about the weakness -- talked about apologies from the obama administration. was that really appropriate right in the middle of the crisis? >> ryan: on that same bay the obama administration had the exact same position. they disavowed their own statement that put up earlier in the day in cairo. but it's never too early to speak up for our values. we should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was up and starting when iran people were being attacked. we should alwaysing stand up for peace, for demom aresy and individual rights. and not imposing these devastating defense cuts because what that does when we equivocate on our values -- it projects weakness, and when we look weak our adversaries are -- >> biden: that's all a bunch of ma lar i can. >> be specific. >> biden: the congressman here cut embassy security in his bert by $300 billion below what we asked for. number two governor romney before he even knew that our ambassador was killed he was making a political statement panne

talking about stimulating growth. and, david axelrod, who talked about the brazenness of governor romney, which is utterly laughable, no one is more brazen than david axelrod, he is ignoring the reality, destroying what the governor has said. that is unconscionable, i think you will pay a major price for it in the pool. megyn: i want to get to this soundbite from governor romney from the debate. he seemed to be talking about the different approaches. >> that manically, there are three ways we can cut the deficit. one, of course, is to raise taxes. number two is to cut spending, number three is to grow the economy. because if more people work in a growing economy, they are paying taxes and you can get the job done that way. the president would prefer raising taxes. i understand. the problem with raising taxes is that it slows down the rate of growth. you can never quite get the job done. i want to lower spending and encourage economic growth at the same time. megyn: he is talking about broadening the tax base, because if you lower the taxes, people have more money, they spend more money,

out what a liar mitt romney is. if he was talking are speaking last night, he was lying. >> you know, i think that we expected an aggressive debater to show up last night. we did not expect an aggressively dishonest debater to show it. and that is what we got with mitt romney. >> many people are saying that what they saw was that governor romney that they have known all along and has been the problem in the past and they haven't seen that person. that he finally emerged during the debate. >> so you think that he lied through his teeth when he said he was going to cut taxes for wealthy people? >> he is the etch-a-sketch guy who has transformed himself and quite frankly, we always have to wonder which mitt romney is going to show up. if you just lay out lie after lie after lie about your own plan, as well as what the president has been talking about, of course you can look good. megyn: joining me now is chris stirewalt, host of "power play." i wanted to get back to january of 2009 when president obama in a common about immigration. joe wilson, shouted out, you lie on the floor of the h

have, our strongest allies, the european countries, eastern european countries. romney is talking, romney is channeling reagan. >>eric: take a listen to the obama, i am not sure it is the campaign or the super pac but an ad talking about romney's foreign policy experience. >> reckless. amateurish. that is what news media and fellow republicans called mitt romney's gaffe filled tour of england saying the knee-jerk response showed a lack of presidential character. even republican perts said romney's remarks were the worst possible reaction to what happened. earthquake amateur in. >>guest: did romney make a few mistakes? sure, that is what happens first time out of the box. the policies, though, and the substance, are what really makes the difference. it is not just pretty speeches. on the other hand, it is not just using the american military to push our way around the world. i found this speech actually really phenomenal. i commend him for doing it. >>eric: i asked the producer to put something over the weekend, the israeli air force knocking down a drone. i believe, i don't think

romney is 0-for-3 good rhetoric, zero in substance. let's talk about libya which has been the hot spot with the horror of the bengahzi consulate. this has been the biggest problem for the white house where you have the strategy. >> yes. >> eliot: it seems at a political level mitt romney is capitalizing on what appears to be a moment of weakness by the administration, but is not libya in essence a success story. >> yes, it's difficult for romney to talk about. he says today we're still in a battle between the tyrants and the democrats. that's not what is happening in libya today. that's what happened a year ago. when that happened, as jay carney pointed out, he was on the wrong side. he was not in favor of getting rid of gadhafi. you have these weak fragmented states, it's not clear what romney would do to assist these weak states to keep them from falling apart. >> eliot: in romney's speech, early in the speech he said and he goes on at some length after the attack this is in bengahzi, tens of thousands of libyans held a massive protest against the extremists who murdered the ambassad

, and when rom romney talks about repealing health care reform that's women's costs are going up, i'm not spending on my family, these issues are interconnected for women and that's been the president from president obama and joe biden in the way that romney and ryan are trying to get around talking about it. >> i think also ryan was going out of his way to appear sort of moderate and not is logically extreme and then was asked about the abortion question and really like, you know, kind of had a nonanswer almost because he doesn't believe in a woman's right to choose and -- >> he doesn't even agree with romney. when he said in a romney administration here's what position would be. that's not his position. he's actually more extreme than governor romney. >> he was the one sponsoring amendments with -- >> legitimate rape, which i like biden got that in there too. >> that's a separate ding. >> ben, the math thing has always been a trick of late, the arithmetic has been tricky for ryan, i'm referring to interviews with brit hume and chris wallace where he didn't have enough time to expl

romney pays in his federal income tax. >> even when biden wasn't on his campaign talking points he was using his very own special brand of biden-ooez to tug the rug out from under paul ryan's feet. >> this is a bunch of stuff. look here's the deal -- >> what does that mean. >> we irish call it mularkey. >> the greatest hope for republicans was a gaffe but biden managed to take his weakness and redirect it towards governor romney. >> romney is a good man, he cares about 100% of americans in this country. with respect to that quote, i think the vice president very well knows that sometimes the words don't come out of your mouth the right way. >> i always say what i mean. and so does romney. >> this morning both sides are claiming victory and, indeed, everything may change in the next five days when president obama and governor romney take the stage again. but what biden did give is the president -- gave the president a path throwing his detractors off the scent and leading his best friend on the path towards victory. franklin, as the new guy at the table, i ask you first, did vice pr

was the governor of massachusetts. on what grounds does mitt romney talk about job creation. you didn't create jobs under bain or when you were government of massachusetts. jobs, what are you talking about jobs for? you don't know anything about jobs, 47 out of 50 and we're in a fight with this guy? he's leading now? you're kidding me! part of the reason is progressives are more honest than conservatives. when conservatives lose a debate oh, no, we won we won. i don't care, we won. what do liberals do, they said you're right we lost. >> president obama was not prepared for his huge debate. this isn't about left, right good or bad, it's about coming to work to work. >> i think he was taken aback at the brazenness. >> i believe that mr. obama took a licking last night. the public knows that. he seemed not disinterested, but uninterested. he looked as if he really would rather be somewhere else. >> when you've got to lead, try to sit on the ball in basketball and you've got the lead, when you play conservative, you often lose the lead. >> the president bizarrely just failed to show up. >> i'm showing

they needed to do something. the first thing you're talking about with mitt romney and foreign policy had been this trip to europe, europe, poland, israel, the olympics hadn't gone so well. now they have something to talk about. how did it go? i think the main difference and what they strive to do is paint a contrast between them and the obama administration. the contrast becomes part of their posturing. how are we going to approach foreign policy differently? the posture is that obama's foreign policy is lead from behind, i think mitt romney is really lean forward. we're trying to use our influence in the middle east to -- but really we're trying to use our influence in the region to get the outcomes we want in order to shape the policies that we want, in order to receive the outcomes that we want in the middle east. >> let's be honest, posturing is what we've got here. was his speech heavy on detail or light on detail? >> i'm stealing this from someone on twitter who said the difference between romney and obama on foreign policy is romney says speak louder but carry the same stick. sort of t

of question as to whether or not the romney tax plan adds up. the ryan folks i talked to want to keep it at 20,000 feet. they want ryan to stick with the romney-like message of jobs and the economy, sound centrist, don't get too far out there in some sort of ideological makers versus takers debate. >> everybody that's ever worked for many years in industrial company or any kind, joan, fears the guy like paul ryan to show up. he comes in and he's the efficiency expert. he's the cost cutter. he comes in looking for people to fire, you know? everybody hates him. can he make him look like that guy or can he wag his tail and seem like he's the cute younger guy and get away with that? >> i don't think he really needs -- you should think about wagging his tail and being the cute younger guy, chris, because then you really do have this amazing stature gap between the two men. there's an age gap, an experience gap. i don't think paul rye yaen can afford to look cute and fuzzy. i think this is teed up perfectly for joe biden. all the things we talked about last week we wished the president might have th

and us let safe. >> i want to talk to you right in the middle of the crisis, governor romney, and you're talking about this again tonight, talked about the weakness, talked about apologies from the obama administration. was that appropriate right in the middle of the crisis in >> on that same day, the obama administration had the exact same position. let's recall, they disavowed their own statement they put out early in the day in cairo. it's never too early to speak out for our values. we should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was starting, when the mullas in iran war attacking their people. we should not have called assad a reformer when he was turning russian provided guns on his own people. we should always stand up for peace, democracy and individual rights and not be imposing these devastating defense cuts. because what that does, when we show -- when we look weak, our enemies are much more willing to test us. and our allies are -- >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey. >> why is that so? >> nothing he said is accurate. >> be specific. >> i wil

and this is a politically charged issue. how many weeks ago was it that mitt romney was in so much trouble for not talking about veterans and not mentioning the afghanistan war at the republican convention in tampa? it is also interesting that the sense of hope you mentioned -- you are open to a buy at least a part-time job or a full-time job. -- find at least a part-time job or a full-time job. these are the months where people are wanting to hire part- time employees to make up for the extra work there will be for the holiday season. host: 44,000 jobs bump in the health-care industry according to the bureau of labor statistics. as our guest minted at our caller mentioned, a drop in manufacturing. there is a question about explaining the criteria that the department of labor uses statistics -- department of labor uses as statistics. guest: people can make a lot of the unemployment rate in one way. on the other side, there will be people who can stand it the other way. people who have been employed for a certain amount of time have to cross the threshold in terms of how long you have been employed. it is

. tavis: on the issue of afghanistan, governor romney did not get around to talking about it in his republican nomination acceptance speech. he did get around talking about it this week. what kind of debate will we have? what kind of a debate should we have about it can stand? >> i think one of the big problems is that we will not hear a debate about afghanistan. we will not hear about the more than 2000 u.s. soldiers who have been killed in afghanistan and we certainly will live here about the scores of thousands -- 10's, 20's of thousands of afghan civilians who have been killed in afghanistan because of this war. what we will hear from president obama is unwinding down. but that is not good enough. this is a war that we never had the possibility of "winning" whenever we -- whatever we think that means this week. the cia has said that, not only is osama bin laden is dead, but the number of operatives in afghanistan is somewhere between 50 and 100 people. we have 100,000 u.s. paid contractors, 40,000 nato troops to go after 100 guys? really? this is crazy. this is one of those wars

want to talk a little bit about this speech today. thank you for joining us. what does mitt romney have to do in this speech? what sort of expectations are built up? guest: this will be romney's foreign-policy speech. it is clearly pretty late in the game for him to be delivering a speech like this. early voting has started in the number of states. he wants to continue some of the momentum he built up last week's debate. it's a chance for him to make a clear contrast between himself and the president. more importantly, it's another chance for his campaign to show that there is more of a choice between him and obama and less of a referendum. when romney pick his running mate this summer, there was a sense that this would be a chance for him to outline things for his own and have a policy position that would set him apart from the president. but we've seen over the past couple of weeks at the campaign dynamic has not changed that much. this is just one more issue on which the republicans are trying to get the president. >> what you have seen from the speech so far, is mitt romney going to

♪ ♪ two down and two more to go. week is the second debate between obama and romney. we didn't talk about immigration. of that is president obama went forward with the executive order that was like the dream act. surprised it hasn't come up yet. pleased it's a town hall format.s, people in the audience can choose the question and we can hear from them, rather than either of them going at one another or through moderator. what do you want to hear? who really caused the collapse of the economy. wasn't no child left behind or two wars on credit card or tax cuttism would love to see if romney will go there and say let's just stop this. this back and define what caused the collapse of the economy? that would have been a long debate. do you want to hear? the president answer on libya. it different than biden? susan rice and national director of intelligence and hillary clinton. debate was probably a draw. can't have a draw. needs a rebounding sin win, because if he doesn't and it's a draw. romney looks qualified to be president and obama loses. what do you want to hear? mome

is introduced in the conversation by governor romney. >> that's the point. -- (talking over one another) >> he did it as a dodge so he wouldn't have to talk about the fact that he distorted -- (talking over one another) >> i will never raise taxes on the middle class. forget about the fact that -- >> hold on. obama says fix the debt. romney says if we are going to borrow $0.40 ever every dollar i am going to cut out the spending this president won't cut. >>> fox news contributor jonah goldberg also talking about this. it seems the president is trying to make a joe the plumber moment out of this. >> you have to have a heart of stone not to laugh what the left and obama campaign are going through. in 2008 obama said if you don't have a record to run on then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from. you make a big election about small things. 28 days to the election and he is trying to use big boyered as joe the plumber. joe the plumber was a far more significant representative issue than anything big bird represents. >>> charles krauthammer saying it is trivial and diminishes th

were talking about the non-swing state growth in the polls, for mr. romney, is he having enough growth in a non-swing state poll to potentially tip it from a leans democrat state to a lean republican state? is he expanding the battleground map at all with this growth that he's experiencing? >> well, that's not clear. there's some movement in michigan, not a lot. you know, i've seen some polling data, believe it or not, maine is one of the states with the electoral votes that split. there's some movement for him. instead of losing by double digits in a place like new jersey it's down to single digits instead of double digits in the second congressional district of maine, it's single digits. that's where you've seen shifts. that doesn't mean there's been movement among independents in virginia, in the battlegrounds, movement in wisconsin. wisconsin's gone from high single digits to low single digits for the president. there's real movement in the battlegroundses. we're seeing more movement in the non-battleground states and we have evidence, we did some analysis here, you know, romney ha
